Bigcommerce is #6 on the Best Places to Work in Austin

Last week, we were honored that Bigcommerce placed sixth on the Austin Business Journal’s Best Places to Work list (up from 13th last year). There are a ton of great companies in this city, and to be singled out is a huge deal for us.

One thing we love about this award is that it’s based on surveys taken by our employees. Our HR team works really hard to build a great workplace, one that makes people actually look forward to coming in every day. We do it because we want to attract the best and the brightest to come work here, but also because we want to enjoy coming in to work every day.

How do we do it? By focusing on our employees and giving them everything they need to focus on our clients.


We foster an environment for superstars to come in and thrive, with a “work hard and get stuff done” mentality. We encourage our employees to constantly think about what more they could be doing for our clients, and regularly recognize and reward them for doing so, whether through sharing shoutouts at our weekly company meeting or through our quarterly awards.

We look for people that are equal parts humble and ambitious (our CFO calls this “humbitious”) — the kind of people you don’t mind spending all day with, and want to have a beer with after work. Once we find them, we make sure they know their number one goal is to change lives by offering the best e-commerce platform in the known universe. Having such a strong vision shared among amazing people makes us more a family than a company.


Part of building a fun, vibrant culture is having an extraordinary workspace. Our office doesn’t just add to our culture, it represents it — while at the same time giving our employees a comfortable, enjoyable place to work.

As you can see from the photos above, we hired local Austin artists to paint our walls with murals that reflect who we are, what we do and where we live. We combine that with swings (really), espresso bars, a kitchen fully stocked with drinks and snacks, two kegerators, a game room where you can challenge an executive to a Street Fighter deathmatch, and tons of intraoffice transportation methods (skateboards, scooters, a miniature Vespa) to create a place people are happy to call home five days a week.

And the cool thing is that all the Best Places to Work surveys were taken before we even moved into this wonderful new office!
