Bigcommerce Workshop FAQ: 5 Social Media Marketing Questions Answered

Social media marketing can be a daunting task for any new business owner. To help you out, we’ve compiled a handful of questions that clients have asked in our regular Success Workshops. The workshops are open to all Bigcommerce clients, and teach you everything you need to know to open your store. If you haven’t attended one yet, you can register for a session online.

1. How can social media help me drive more business to my store?

Just like any other business or marketing objective, it’s critical to have a strategy in place before you jump in. Your social media presence is only as effective as the community you have around it.  That means you can have tons of amazing products and content, but if no one is liking or commenting on your page then it’s not getting shared.

We recommend that clients start small and focus on the three or four channels where your customers (or potential customers) are already talking. This will require some research and surveying up front to learn where your customers want to engage with you.

For many of you, this will probably end up being Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. However, if you have a niche product or speciality (ex: handmade bird feeders), it’s in your best interest to look for and be active on niche social sites, like industry-specific community forums, Ning sites, Quora, LinkedIn Groups, etc.


2. How do I grow my fanbase on my social media accounts?

One of the first questions I always get is “How do I get more likes on my page?”. The short answer is that it takes time and effort to develop a huge community of raving brand evangelists. You aren’t going to wake up seven days after you create your Facebook page with 1,000+ likes and a booming community.

A word of caution: There are plenty of sites out there that prey on businesses looking to gain a zillion followers and likes in one day with little effort. Nothing good will ever come from buying 10,000 followers for $100. All those sites do is add tons of spam and bot accounts to your profile page.

However, here are a few tips that can help you speed up the process.

  • Include social media icons prominently on your store’s homepage

  • Create content that adds either utilitarian (helping your customers solve a problem) or entertainment (humorous content) value

  • Offer incentives for store visitors to “like” or “follow” your pages:

    • We recommend using tools like Justuno or SocialRebate, which allow you to offer instant offers and discounts to people who like your page.


3. How do I show my social media accounts on my store’s homepage?

There are many different ways to display your business’s social presence. We have compiled a couple of helpful step-by-step tutorials that will walk you through the most popular choices.


4. How do I sell on Facebook?

5. Will social media help my SEO efforts?

Social media can have a ton of indirect influence on your SEO rankings. The two biggest ways are from external links and fresh content. The first and foremost is that your social media accounts will almost always show up on the first page of Google for your company name. This can be helpful in driving brand awareness.

Secondly, as Google’s search algorithms continue to get smarter, it puts a bigger focus on new, fresh and high-quality content. If you are writing a bunch of high-quality blog posts or taking killer product photos that are getting shared like crazy on social media channels, it will likely start to improve your search rankings for that particular page in time.
