Key highlights:
Shoppers can automatically apply coupon codes via any BigCommerce storefront URL.
Works across email campaigns, social ads, SMS, QR codes, and more.
Supports multi-coupon flows and B2B Edition checkout.
One of the most common requests we've heard from our merchant community is simple: "Is there a way to create a link that automatically applies a coupon code?"
Now the answer is yes — and it works anywhere you're already marketing. Drop it in an email campaign, embed it in a social ad, or add it to an SMS and shoppers land on your store with their discount already applied. No extra steps, no manual entry, just a seamless path from click to checkout.
Adding a coupon to any link is as simple as appending ?couponcode=YOURCODE to any BigCommerce storefront URL — your homepage or a product page. For example:
https://www.mystore.com/?couponcode=welcome10
That's it. Drop that link into your email campaign, social ad, SMS, or wherever your shoppers are, and the discount does the rest.
Note: The couponcode parameter works on storefront pages like the homepage or product pages. It does not work on /checkout URLs.
Once a shopper clicks your link, the coupon is applied automatically the moment they land on your store — no manual entry required. It works seamlessly across a range of real-world shopping flows:
A shopper clicks the link from a social channel (e.g. Instagram, TikTok) and goes straight to the cart.
A shopper clicks the link from a campaign email, browses the store, adds items, then heads to checkout.
A shopper already has a cart and then clicks the link.
Running multiple promotions? No problem. Auto-apply also supports multi-coupon flows, so shoppers can arrive via one coupon link and apply an additional code on top. For example, a shopper might land via a welcome10 email link and also apply a freeshipping code — both discounts apply seamlessly.
Email marketing: Embed the coupon link in your CTA button. When subscribers click "Shop Now," the discount is already applied.
SMS campaigns: Short links with embedded codes mean your mobile shoppers get a one-tap path to savings.
Influencer and affiliate partnerships: Give partners a URL with their unique code built in. Attribution stays clean and the experience is frictionless.
Social media and paid ads: Pair a compelling offer with a link that delivers on it — instantly.
QR codes: Print a QR code linked to a coupon URL on packaging, signage, or event materials. Scan and shop, discount included.
Auto-apply coupon links are flexible and support a variety of BigCommerce setups:
Coupons created in the legacy coupon code functionality (Marketing > Coupon codes)
B2B Edition Checkout
Multi-coupon flows
Stencil-based storefronts only*
*Note: Auto-apply coupon links currently support Stencil-based storefronts. Headless storefronts are not supported at this time.
Getting started is easy:
Create your coupon promotion in your BigCommerce control panel.
Add the coupon code link to your email, SMS, or social campaign.
Test your campaign to ensure ?couponcode=YOURCODE appears on the storefront URL (homepage, product page).
