Replaced manual product management with a scalable ecommerce foundation that saves time and supports future growth.
When an engineer is designing an assembly line, finding the right part isn't optional. It has to be exact. That's the standard DESTACO has built its business around for more than 110 years.
But behind the scenes, managing nearly a million SKUs through spreadsheets and manual updates made it harder to deliver the fast, precise digital experience modern buyers expected.
To simplify product management, improve search performance, and create a better buying experience for engineers, DESTACO rebuilt its ecommerce foundation with BigCommerce, creating a faster, smarter storefront that's ready for the future.
DESTACO's customers don't browse. They search with purpose.
Whether they're designing an automotive assembly line or specifying equipment for a manufacturing facility, they need detailed specifications, CAD models, and technical data before they can move forward.
"Engineers are very precise on what they're looking for, and your data has to be pretty exact,” shared Darren Greene, Global Marketing Director at DESTACO. “It's not like a running shoe website, where you say, 'I need a colour, I need a size.' It's, 'How does this product work, and will it fit in my application?'"
As DESTACO's catalog grew to nearly a million SKUs, delivering that level of precision became increasingly difficult. Product information was managed through spreadsheets and manual uploads, turning routine updates into manual projects that could take days or even weeks.
"We couldn't continue to survive doing Excel spreadsheets and manual data uploads. We were too reliant on manual processes, and we needed to take that next step into a more robust system," said Greene.
The storefront itself added another layer of complexity. Built on a legacy platform inherited from a former parent company, it struggled with speed and search visibility, making it harder for engineers to quickly find the products they needed.
For a company known for engineering precision, the digital experience no longer reflected the quality of its products.

Managing nearly a million SKUs starts with having one reliable place for product data.
Instead of maintaining information across spreadsheets and manual uploads, DESTACO centralised its catalog in a product information management (PIM) system and connected it to BigCommerce through APIs. Product data now flows directly from the PIM to the storefront, ensuring engineers always have access to current specifications, technical documentation, and product information.
"We keep all of our data in our PIM, and we have a great API connection that takes the data and exposes it to our website," said Greene.
With product information managed from a single source, updates happen once and are reflected across the storefront automatically. The result is a more efficient workflow for the DESTACO team and a more reliable buying experience for engineers, who can trust they're always working with the latest product information.
For DESTACO's customers, product photos aren't enough. Engineers need technical specifications, dimensions, and CAD models they can use in their own designs before making a purchase.
Rather than build those capabilities from scratch, DESTACO integrated third-party CAD configurators directly into its BigCommerce product and series pages. Working with BigCommerce agency partner Mira Commerce, the team created a seamless experience that gives engineers the technical information they need without adding unnecessary complexity.
"We use a third-party for our CAD configurators, and we were able to integrate those with our product and series pages," shared Greene. "We worked with Mira Commerce, and they made the integrations very seamless."
By combining specialised engineering tools with BigCommerce's flexible architecture, DESTACO created a buying experience that reflects how its customers actually work, helping engineers move from research to purchasing with greater confidence.
Even with better product data and technical resources, navigating a catalog of nearly a million SKUs can still feel overwhelming, especially for customers who don't know the exact part number they're looking for.
To simplify product discovery, DESTACO introduced an AI-powered chatbot that helps buyers search using everyday language. Instead of sorting through pages of technical data, customers can describe what they're trying to accomplish and receive relevant product recommendations faster.
"We've introduced an AI bot, and it's helped with the more conversational ways people want to search," said Greene. "A customer can ask for a product that does a certain application, and we don't have to make them go through pages and pages of data to find the right one."
The new approach removes friction from the buying journey while making DESTACO's deep product expertise easier to access. Whether a customer arrives with a part number or simply knows the application they're trying to solve, they can find answers faster and move forward with confidence.

When DESTACO reviewed the numbers after launching its new ecommerce experience, the team didn't celebrate right away.
"I thought, 'Oh no, something is broken because these numbers don't seem real,'" shared Greene. "I ran the reports over and over. I had other people run the reports. We all looked at each other like, 'Yeah, it is. That's crazy.'"
The results confirmed what the team was already seeing. Engineers could find products more easily, product information was simpler to manage, and the business had a stronger digital foundation to support future growth.
Key outcomes included:
65% increase in leads compared to the previous six months
73% improvement in page load speed
18.7% improvement in search rankings
"Where we came from, our rankings and page loads were pretty dismal," said Greene. "Seeing the faster load times and better rankings now, it was night and day."
By replacing manual processes with a modern ecommerce foundation, DESTACO gave its team more time to focus on customers instead of maintaining product data, while creating a buying experience built for the next generation of engineers.

With a modern ecommerce foundation in place, DESTACO is focused on what's possible instead of what's holding the business back. The team is exploring new ways to combine AI with its CAD configurators, helping engineers move from describing an application to identifying the right products and assemblies even faster.
"The sky's kind of the limit here," said Greene. "I don't know exactly where the limit is, but I know that we've got a wide open road in front of us."
Whether it's expanding AI-powered product discovery or continuing to simplify how engineers find the right solutions, DESTACO now has the flexibility to keep evolving alongside its customers and the manufacturing industry.
